Ladera Elementary: Illusions and the Brain with Mr. Warren's Class

In December, we visited Mr. Warren’s 4th and 5th grade class at Ladera Elementary School in Tustin for a hands‑on exploration of the brain and how it shapes the way we experience the world. Students rotated through two interactive stations where they learned about visual illusions, why the brain gets tricked, what these illusions reveal about perception, and how our senses and expectations work together to build reality.

The highlight of the day came when students had the rare opportunity to hold and compare real human, dog, and mouse brains. Through this guided comparative neurobiology activity, they discovered how brain size, structure, and specialization differ across species and what those differences tell us about behavior, evolution, and sensory priorities.

One of the most memorable parts of the visit was the sheer number of thoughtful questions the students asked. Their curiosity was nonstop, and there were so many insightful questions that we couldn’t even answer them all before our time was up. The room was filled with big ideas, genuine wonder, and that unmistakable spark of discovery.

This visit was part of our ongoing effort to bring accessible, hands‑on neuroscience education to local schools. Our goal is to empower young learners to explore the brain with curiosity, confidence, and a sense of connection to science.
